Andreas Martens, MD
Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Martens, born in 1975, studied medicine at Hannover Medical School. He undertook his cardiovascular residency at the Department of Cardiac, Thoracic, Transplantation, and Vascular Surgery at Hannover Medical School from 2002 to 2011.
Between 2008 and 2010, he completed a research fellowship at the LEBAO (Leibniz Research Laboratories for Biotechnology and Artificial Organs) with an emphasis on cardiac stem cell therapy.
In 2011, he assumed the role of attending physician and staff surgeon, specializing in thoracic aortic surgery. He attained his qualification as a senior lecturer (Venia legendi) in 2017, focusing his research on aortic arch surgery. He became adjunct professor in 2020.
In 2023, Prof. Martens was appointed Director of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Klinikum Oldenburg and Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg. In 2024, he established the Northwest German Aortic Center at Klinikum Oldenburg.
His primary scientific interests include aortic root repair, aortic arch surgery, cardiovascular stem cell research, and surgical training. In its current research projects, the team led by
Prof. Martens focuses, among other things, on treatment pathways and care structures for patients with aortic disease.
Prof. Martens is member of the aortic commission and the commission for education and training of DGTHG (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Thorax-, Herz- und Gefäßchirurgie).
